Knowing When to Delete a Game (and When to Wait)

Knowing When to Delete a Game (and When to Wait)

September 13, 2026 · Jonas Vikström

We play a lot of games that don't make it onto the site, and deciding when to stop is a skill of its own. I used to force myself through boring openings out of guilt. I don't anymore.

My rule: give a game until its systems unlock. Many strategy games are dull in the tutorial because they're holding back the good stuff. Emberwild Chronicle, for example, is slow until the party opens up around hour two, and then it sings. Quit too early and you'd never know.

But there are red flags that mean quit now. If the game nags you to come back every ten minutes, if progress feels gated behind waiting rather than skill, or if every system is just a reskin of the last — those don't improve. They get worse.

The honest signal is your own attention. If you're opening a game out of habit and closing it feeling nothing, that's your answer. Space on a phone is precious and so is your evening.

Deleting a game isn't failure. Finishing one you don't enjoy is the actual waste.
