Your First Three Tech Choices Decide the Whole Match
I lost more early matches than I'd like to admit before I understood how much weight the opening carries. Those first few tech picks lock in your options for the rest of the game, long before you feel the consequences.
The temptation is always to grab the shiny military upgrade first. It feels strong and it's satisfying. But in most games I've played, an early economy pick compounds — it pays for everything else you want later. The military feels good; the economy wins.
That said, read the map. If a game throws a brutal early rush at you, pure economy is suicide. This is why scouting ties directly into tech choices: you can't plan your opening without knowing what's coming.
My habit now is to decide my first three picks before I build anything, then stay flexible after. Having a plan beats reacting, but refusing to adapt beats having no plan at all. It's a balance you learn by losing.
If you only change one thing about your play, delay the fun upgrade by two tiers. You'll be surprised how often it carries the whole run.
